Popular Drinks

Bia Hoi

3% ABV

Fresh draft beer brewed daily, served on street corners for as little as 3,000 VND (~$0.12).

Saigon / Hanoi / 333 Beer

5% ABV

Vietnam's major beer brands. Saigon and 333 dominate the south, Hanoi in the north.

Drinking Culture

Vietnam has a strong beer culture — it's the largest beer market in Southeast Asia. "Bia hoi" joints are social hubs where locals sit on tiny plastic stools. The culture of "tram phan tram" (100%) means drinking your whole glass when toasting. Drinking is primarily a male social activity, though this is changing.

DUI Penalties

Vietnam enforces ZERO tolerance for BAC since 2020. Any detectable BAC: fine 6-8M VND for motorbike, 30-40M VND for car. License suspended 22-24 months. Repeat offenders face criminal charges.

Traveler Tips

1

Bia hoi is incredibly cheap — 3,000-5,000 VND per glass (~$0.15).

2

Vietnam has ZERO BAC tolerance for driving since 2020 — do not drive after any amount.

3

Grab is the go-to ride-hailing app for getting home safely.

4

"Tram phan tram" (bottoms up) is expected when toasting — sip if you must.

5

Avoid homemade rice wine of unknown origin — methanol contamination is a real risk.
