Popular Drinks

Vodka

40% ABV

Russia's national drink. Traditionally consumed neat, ice-cold, in one shot with zakuski (appetizers).

Baltic Beer

5% ABV

Baltika is the dominant beer brand with numbered varieties (#3 Classic, #7 Export, #9 Strong).

Kvass

1.5% ABV

Fermented rye bread drink, barely alcoholic. Sold from tanks on the street in summer.

Drinking Culture

Russian drinking culture involves toasts at every round — the host or a designated toaster makes elaborate speeches. Refusing vodka in social settings can be impolite. "Za zdorovye!" (To health!) is the most common toast. Alcohol consumption has decreased significantly since the 2000s due to government policies.

DUI Penalties

BAC 0.03%+: fine 30,000 RUB, license revoked 1.5-2 years. Repeat offense within 1 year: criminal charge, fine up to 300,000 RUB or imprisonment up to 2 years.

Traveler Tips

1

Each round of vodka comes with a toast — listen, drink, then eat zakuski immediately.

2

Never put an empty bottle back on the table — superstition says it brings bad luck.

3

Vodka is meant to be consumed neat, ice-cold. Don't mix it.

4

The Moscow Metro is one of the world's best — use it to get home safely.

5

Alcohol sales are restricted after 11pm in many regions.
