Indonesia's most famous beer, a Heineken-brewed pilsner. The Bintang singlet is a backpacker icon.

Drinking Culture

As the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, alcohol is culturally sensitive outside tourist areas. Bali is the exception, with a liberal drinking culture catering to tourists. In Java and other islands, alcohol is available but less visible. Some regions have local restrictions.

DUI Penalties

BAC 0.05%+: fine or imprisonment varies by region. Generally: fine up to IDR 750,000 and/or 3 months imprisonment. More severe in Aceh province (Sharia law).

Traveler Tips

1

In Bali, alcohol is widely available. Outside Bali, availability varies greatly.

2

NEVER drink homemade arak — methanol poisoning kills tourists every year.

3

Minimarkets may not sell alcohol in some Muslim-majority areas.

4

Gojek and Grab are reliable ride-hailing options.

5

Bintang is safe and available everywhere in tourist areas.
