Popular Drinks

Stella (Egyptian)

4.5% ABV

Egypt's national beer since 1897 — not related to Stella Artois. Light and refreshing in the heat.

Sakara Gold

4% ABV

Popular Egyptian lager, increasingly preferred over Stella by younger drinkers.

Drinking Culture

Egypt is a Muslim-majority country, so alcohol is culturally sensitive. It's available in hotels, tourist areas, licensed restaurants, and liquor stores ("drinkies"). During Ramadan, alcohol service is heavily restricted. Egyptians who drink tend to do so privately or in tourist-oriented venues.

DUI Penalties

BAC 0.05%+: fine up to EGP 3,000, imprisonment up to 6 months, license suspended. Public intoxication can also lead to detention. Laws are enforced unevenly.

Traveler Tips
